As you've noted here and in your other post, it has it's uses. We achieved military results entirely because of it in the early wars. In your other post you mention in San Diego and it's bilingualism. You know as well as I that those mandatory 2(now 4?) years of Spanish in HS didn't change the barrio being the barrio. Most of the time it went in-n-out anyway. With all the hostiles it's not likely anyone is going to actually intermarry who wasn't already doing it.
Four years? Well, I think that foreign language studies are helpful cognitively regardless of what they intend to do culturally or any other way. I believe it was under Gov. Schwazenegger that California shifted to a more immersion based English as a Second Language approach, with positive results for non-native English speakers.
Although "Yossi" a student at Hebrew University from Yaffo or Abu Ghosh who speaks perfect Hebrew can ask out a Jewish exchange student from the U. S., she falls in love, and then he happens to mention he's not Jewish...
Yea, when I was in the system it was 2. My brother is 2.5y younger and he and the one 9 years my junior both had to take 4 years of it. Neither speaks a word. I retained enough to have broken conversations somehow.
>Intermarriage
**And speaking of our "neighbors," Jews learning Arabic will also make it easier for Arabs and Jews to get together socially. Even more so, the Arabs connecting with these Arabic-learning Jews would be those non-Hebrew-speaking Arabs, who despise everything about Israel, such as Hebrew being its official language.
Social interaction leads to dating, which leads to a romantic connection. How many more cases of abusive Arab husbands battering their Jewish wives will result from MK Hazan's proposal? And what about the increase in cases of young, Jewish men being seduced into meeting their prospective Arab girlfriends in Ramallah, only to meet with a torturous death?**
Romantic connections, abusive Arab husbands, Arab gf's in Ramallah... What isn't intermarriage concerns there? They're valid for themselves but I'm just saying those people will do it anyway with or without Arabic (as has been shown).
Spanish: I am an embarrassment, as I had so many opportunities to use Spanish but didn't. All of a sudden I show up in a major city on the East Coast in the 90s and I'm somehow "bilingual?" It's all relative, I guess. My father kept encouraging us. My sister took five years out of choice. I have never been great with speaking, but with Hebrew still am way ahead of many entitled 'Muricans in Israel. Texting, and then emailing, in Hebrew was a big help to me.
Intermarriage: Maybe. But if we can prevent one more from occurring...
Note: When there were demonstrations against intermarriage many years ago: Holon, Beer Sheva, etc. the photos revealed that most of the men did not have kippot. Most were not visibly religious. Traditional, maybe. But there were plenty of seculars out there.
Personally I found Spanish helpful for the major pitfalls of Anglos in Hebrew: gender and verb conjugation. If you had even partial ability in Spanish, you were magically able to do it in Hebrew because it works very similarly (i.e. you have boy and girl versions, you have present for right now and past for what used to be and future for what you want to do).
Can agree that texting/emailing in Hebrew was helpful..got me married...
>Intermarriage
I mean, this is a general thing..Prevent one from happening? Can happen in so many ways without crippling our understanding of just how much they hate us.
I was in the market a few days back and an Arab worker mumbled something like "they will fight in the summer" as he passed by me with my srugi. So...I expect summer to heat up. I know this only because of my very very basic Arabic.
I'm not in favor of intermarriage (I come from one after all), but, language isn't the only factor and like I said, a lot more was gained from Arabic speakers than lost.
True about Spanish, not to mention proximity to diverse cultures, helping Americans to adapt to life in Israel. Some NYers and Angelinos succeed because of this; some fail, due to having lived their lives in bubbles.
Yeah, I remember it. I'm a fan of the Rav Uziel approach myself. I think alienating people doesn't fix all problems and there are plenty (like myself) who will make the jump and could use the help rather than hinderance.
> Bill for learning Arabic

Regarding intermarriage, whoever said I was talking about hostiles? https://esseragaroth.substack.com/t/intermarriage

But he's a good Arab, right?

Naftali Bennett (I'm NOT a fan) got lots of flack for this sign. https://esseragaroth.substack.com/p/ramle-is-it-permitted-for-jewish-home

If nothing else, we must raise awareness of intermarriage. I am sure you have heard of this controversial statement. https://esseragaroth.substack.com/p/is-intermarriage-like-second-holocaust

I think Huldai sounds just like Pharoah, the Mitzri
